*All of these pics were from the movie itself. Pretty sad when you know what each one goes to huh? :)*
The
Last Unicorn is one of my all time FAVORITE movies. This has been a favorite of
mine since I was a child. I'm almost out of high school now and this movie has
never ceased to enchant or amaze me. The unicorn's grace and beauty is
spectacular, and the other character intrigue me so much. It turns out there's a
lot more
to that story than the movie lets you see.
Get
the book!
Though the Unicorn is wise and sure of everything, her world changes when she
sets out to find the other unicorns. She is captured, turned human, and
she even
falls in love. One might
find the love part good, but not for a unicorn, for once she loves she can't be a
unicorn again. Her human form shatters her, makes her unsure of everything, and
turns part of her mortal yet. In Peter's book the moment where she becomes human
is so tragic and frightening that you won't find the movie version as good. She
goes thru so much, meeting a magician who can't seem to find himself, a hard
cold woman who is in
search of better, a cold hearted unhappy king, and a handsome prince.
The Magician, Schmendrick, can
only do simple carnival tricks. He's supposed to be great in every aspect, and
every corner he turns he's reminded that he is not. He finds himself on the
journey with the
Unicorn
though, doing even the impossible and turns mortal again. He cant be mortal or
age unless he's found himself, its really weird.
Then there's the cold yet
hopeful Molly Grue. She lived with Captain
Culley, and even tho she was the woman of the band of outlaws, she wanted more.
Robin Hood, she loves Robin Hood. And happy endings, in many ways shes a
typical girl, kept young by her hopes and dreams, but the life she's lead has
left her bitter. Along her trip with the Unicorn she softens and becomes
beautiful, don't worry guys, Molly has a happy ending.
King Haggard. This guy is a
walking skeleton wearing his doom in his eye sockets. He's grey, and old, and
sorry as a rainy day
where no birds will sing. He is obsessed
with the fact that nothing makes him
happy, and all suffer with him and are sure to share his doom. In the book, the
town of Hagsgate, of Haggards kingdom, are cursed to prosper with him but fall
when his castle does. Legend goes that Haggard would not pay the witch who built
his castle, so the curse was that the sea would take his castle one
day. He
laughed and said it's not a castle without a curse, and
the poor old man fell to his doom like predicted in the end. Now the sea, that's
where you gotta understand that he has all the unicorns in the world right there
in the sea, and when they all come free, his castle falls.
Prince Lir is the dashing
prince, son of Haggard.
Now you must be thinking, how could that have a son? Prince Lir is
not Haggard's. The movie won't say this, but in the book, Lir was found on a
butchers block with cats huddled all over him. Drinn (I think that's the man's
name) finds Lir, and knows a hero when he sees it, the cats gave it away. The
town is so afraid of it's fate to fall with the castle
that Drinn shoos the cats away and leaves the baby hero to die. Lir is that baby, and
not a day later, King Haggard
announces he has a son. So came to be Lir. Lir
isn't dreary and dreadful like his father, he's curious, kind, and in many ways
as clueless as a young child.
Lady Amalthea is what the
Unicorn is called once she is human. She stays in
Haggard's dreary castle, suffering every day with herself. She becomes so lost
within herself that she doesn't remember anything before she was human. She
becomes mortal enough to love and cry once Lir gets thru to her. It wasn't his
heroic deeds, tho there were many, it was simply his willingness to help her.
All in all the story rocks, below I have the 3 main songs from the movie done by
the group America. I've
always
liked them because I grew up with them, but I don't
expect you to like them right away. Enjoy!
This movie is being remade in the year of 2003. I can't believe it! Not sure if I should go see it tho, I mean it's pretty hard to top this version off. The unicorn is so pretty! :)
